Radhika Philip's new fan funded project Being Here is a compilation of interviews with extraordinary New York City improvisational musicians on the values and practices that inform their music making. The interviews cover composition, improvisation, band leading, and relationship between art and the audience. The book is an invaluable resource on the creative process and tells a story of jazz at this time and place.

Amongst the latest audio interviews posted in the project are: an excerpt of pianist and composer Uri Caine on his Bach Project and of saxophonist and composer Steve Coleman about his composition process.

Bob Brookmeyer

It’s with great sadness that we share the news that Bob Brookmeyer passed away last week, just three days shy of his 82nd birthday. Bob was an integral force in music, making some of the greatest groups in jazz history what we know and admire today. Whether as a composer, arranger or trombonist, his voice is immediately discernible from the very first note, always bringing a smile and one word: "Brookmeyer."

For many of us, Bob has always been a tremendous inspiration and an overflowing wealth of knowledge. You'd be hard to find a large ensemble composer that doesn't have Bob's name on the top of their list of favorites. For those lucky enough to have the opportunity to study with him, we were given more than just an education in the art of being a great composer, we were given a level of both love and support that expanded far beyond the classroom. He had a wonderful ability to cultivate our inner strengths, yet pull us out of our comfort zones and stretch us farther than we could have ever imagined possible.

Bob's newest album, STANDARDS, which was officially released a few weeks ago, was a record Bob was incredibly proud of. It is a true masterpiece in every sense of the word, with each arrangement encompassing everything that is "Bob Brookmeyer."

Bob, you were an amazing force and a fearless leader to all jazz composers. Thank you for your years of inspiration, support, and for leaving a legacy of music to continually inspire us for years to come.

Last week we had the pleasure of joining the great Siedah Garrett who was recording a song for her latest ArtistShare fan-funded project "The Answer's Always Love". The session was produced by the great Barry Eastmond and included an amazing performance with full Gospel choir on the song "Ordinary Miracles". It was truly an inspiring experience to watch such creative geniuses at work. This collection of new songs, one of them dedicated to the late Michael Jackson, is sure to be one of the most inspired fan-funded projects to date.

Last night I leaned on the windowsill and watched the trees in the courtyard tossing in the wind. They were silhouetted against the sky that was lit by the first hint of pearly dawn. It was 5am. My bedtime. Yep, I’m a night owl.

As a kid I’d pester my parents, “Do I have to go to bed now? Do I have to?” Then surrendering to authority, in my wrinkled PJs I’d glumly trudge to my room. But when Friday night arrived, yeaa! I was allowed to stay up! The freedom, the autonomy! And now that I’m an all grown up I make the rules, and every night is Friday night.

But now it’s not so much the autonomy, it’s the night itself I love. The dark surrounding me like a benevolent presence, the streets deserted and silent after the day’s cacophony of jack hammers, horns and buzzing activity. Peace settles over Manhattan, everyone is back in place, no more unruly darting about.

There are enough things to see in New York City to tie your eyes in bows. But equally amazing are things you can’t see, things hidden from view. But once revealed -- even ever-so-briefly -- they live on in our imaginations as the unseen treasures of the city.

While strolling past brownstones, if we had x-ray vision to expose their backyards, we’d find hidden sanctuaries with trees towering above vegetable and herb gardens, and flower borders exploding with roses and petunias; we’d see napping babies, sunning cats, and nesting birds.

Or look down through an open grillwork on certain sidewalks at night and whoa! You’re shocked to find yourself suspended high over a lighted universe, a lower depths where some people spend their entire working lives amid the hidden (to our eyes) electrical wires, steam pipes, meters, tracks, rats, even the occasional alligator!

"Empire" an upcoming release from Scott Colley

Scott Colley's upcoming album "Empire" is his seventh release as a leader and it seems as though his experience has served him well. "It felt to me that writing the material for this recording flowed quite easily. I think that because I have listened to all these musicians so much over the years, and have been fortunate to play with them all in many different musical environments, it was very easy for me to imagine them all playing together and for me to visualize the different timbres and combinations." With it's impressive line up of long standing musical partners Ralph Alessi, Bill Frisell, Craig Taborn, and Brian Blade, "Empire" is sure to be another strong addition to Scott Colley's already formidable discography.

"The way that I decided to schedule the recording was different than my previous ones in that we recorded and mixed it in 4 consecutive days, With 2 days of recording and then starting the next morning with editing and mixing. Usually I would take several weeks in between recording and mixing-taking time to decide on tracks and sift through the material. In this case, on the 3rd day at sear sound, Chris and I would edit one song ahead of the mix. In the control room, James Farber would be working on the mix for each song as soon as the edits were brought to him. And I would move back and forth for 2 days editing and mixing. It was intense for me, but I think that it shaped the recording in a great way. Without a lot of time to reflect(or obsess) about which take to use, I made a lot of quick decisions based on the overall feeling of takes. It made the recording, editing and mixing flow as one process.

Walter Sear-the creator of Sear Sound-passed away since we made this recording. I’ve worked at Sear Sound dozens of times since moving to New York. He created such a great environment for music to happen. I would always look forward to the conversations that I would have with Walter there. Conversations about microphones and recording, movie making, tuba making, the New York music scene in the mid-20th century. I will miss Walter. He was a truly unique and remarkable person."

Part Three

The following is an excerpt from Barbara Feldon's monthly audio essay series entitled "My New York Romance", a featured podcast in her "Living Alone and Loving It" project.

"The other day in Central Park my neighbor saw a large terrier chasing a baby mouse that was darting this way and that trying to escape. A woman passing by saw the life and death drama. She bolted off the walking path, raced to the mouse and shielded it from the dog until it could scamper away. But a few moments later the dog saw it sprint from under some leaves and tore after it again. The mouse tried to save itself by climbing a tree but its little nails couldn’t get a grip on the bark and it kept falling backwards into the path of the onrushing dog. Racing the dog, the woman reached the mouse first, scooped it up in both hands and placed it on a tree branch. Another saved mouse; another story to add to my own mouse chronicles.

Many times I’ve left our co-op in the dead of the night, and trekked to Central Park transporting a captured mouse to a more appropriate home. In winter I cease staking out the basement with mouse houses. If I caught one in frigid weather I would have to release it into the furnace room to stay toasty rather than the park where it would freeze to death."

ArtistShare: Many people have trouble combining personal relationships with work. You have both your sister and your husband in this band, is it a better musical experience for you or do you have problems crossing that line?

Ingrid Jensen: Very rarely are there negative issues. It's really very creative and positive and as crazy as things are in our lives now a days, when we get together it's almost like a break from everything else. As soon as we start playing its just like oh yes we're in the zone together. We just get the music happening and because the music is so personal and because we're all challenging each other, it's a very healthy relationship that seems to evolve on many levels. There were some rough spots in the beginning but the beauty was that we really worked through it all and now it's pretty clear that we'll play together until we're dead or maybe even after that!

ArtistShare: Are there any future tour plans for Nordic Connect?

Ingrid Jensen: We are actually working on some things for the new year. Maggi and Mattias and I are playing in Turkey in June but Jon can't make it. That will definitely be the music of Nordic Connect because that's the music that we all know. We're working on some stuff overseas but it's getting trickier and trickier.

An Update From Maria Schneider

Writing a composition is a long, detail-oriented process. For my latest composition, I have my opening idea, and I know a little about where I want to go with it. But there’s so much left to figure out and discover.

So I’m in the groping part of the process… searching for the “right” idea. When I have an idea that I really like, I want to take care that I bring it to a place that feels fulfilling and inspired. I tend to spend too much time in the fear place. But once I’m out of the fear place it’s calmer waters.

Once I get to the next step I’ll fill you in with where this composition is going.

Interview with Ingrid Jensen part 1

Trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, along with her sister Christine Jensen, husband Jon Wikan, college friend Maggi Olin, and Mattias Welin build their music on family, friendships, relationships, and history, something rare in the "modern jazz" world. Their new album "Spirals" is a continuation of the first Nordic Connect record "Flurry" showing the evolution and connection of a band split up between three continents. ArtistShare recently interviewed Ingrid about the release of "Spirals".

ArtistShare: The Nordic Connect album "Spirals" has just come out, could you explain a bit about the formation and the concept behind this group?

Ingrid Jensen: The concept behind the group is kind of extended family. The band has been together now in different configurations for over 10 years. Maggi and I met at Berkeley and we have been playing ever since then. I worked with her in Sweden a lot before we put this band together. There was always a common thread between the people I seem to gravitate towards here in North America and the musicians that she chose to play with over in Sweden. Also in her compositions there seems to be a real affinity for musical connection. I had the idea at my wedding when my sister and Maggi first met, and of course my husband, and this whole thing evolved into a really important project that is always satisfying musically. We always get to new places because everyone is evolving in their own way as a very strong composer, arranger, and player and when we get together it's just another spiraling of our energies together in relation to where we're at. The new record is a continuation of the first record in the way that we've grown and connected at the same time even though we're so far apart. Half the band is in Scandinavia and the other half of us are in New York and Montreal. The spirals project on ArtistShare is really for us to maintain a strong group feeling.

ArtistShare: Have you found that this particular project has influenced the way you compose or improvise with other groups?

Ingrid Jensen: Well, these guys definitely free me up in my ability to bring something to the table.I can bring just a bass line and maybe a little melody and we can make something out of it. It definitely helps me get over the insecurities that burden my brain when it comes to writing and its also helped me to see that the tunes I contribute can give a breath of fresh air to everyone else's compositions.

Barbara Feldon: Lonely In A Crowd Essay

Remember the expression, "lonely in a crowd"? Manhattan is the perfect place to experience it. The other day I was walking on Sixth Avenue, which is a street that always gives me the creeps. It's a forbidding corridor of glass skyscrapers that looms on as far as you can see. That day horns were blaring, and sirens wailing; hundreds of strangers intent on getting somewhere were streaming past me -- and I was a stranger streaming past them. Our heads were down, no eye contact, no connection. Each of us, foreigners to one another, were isolated in our fortress of self. Lonely in a crowd!

Then someone called "Barbara!" I stopped and looked around. Oh! There was Walter, whom I adore and whom I hadn't seen in ages. He said, "Where are you going so fast, I almost missed you." Instantly, I was out of my fortress and connecting with the world again. Walter looked great, he'd lost weight, had new wire glasses, and was wearing a stylish black trench coat. We chatted a while and then hugged and agreed to have dinner soon.

Thoughts from Maria Schneider: Remembering How it Began

I was cleaning out my storage space the other day and ran across some old cassettes of my first pieces I wrote in college. I decided to sit down and listen to them. I was pretty amazed with what I heard.

In college, I judged myself so harshly. But when I heard what I had done, all these years later, I really couldn't believe the volume and kind of music I produced. And what came back to me as I listened was how THRILLED I was every day to be working, even if much of the thrill was pure terror.

I remember the intensity I felt in searching for the perfect next sound. My adrenalin was up every day. Listening to those cassettes really inspired me to glue my butt to the bench and get to work and find that same intensity again.

It was a gift to find those tapes, and it reminded me of advice I often give to students: Try to reattach yourself to the feeling you had when you first fell in love with music and ride that love and enthusiasm. It's all too easy to get weighed down comparing your works to each other, or by the many things one has to deal with in life, as you get older. To be your best, I think you have to stay like a kid through it all.

"Wildlife in Manhattan" By Barbara Feldon

There’s an abundance of wildlife in Manhattan. One day as I was writing in the dining room a squirrel came flying through the window targeting a bowl of fruit on the table. He was as surprised to see me as I was to see him. And I’ve seen a raccoon doing acrobatics on my balcony railing. But it’s springtime now and time for pigeons.

Two years ago, a pigeon planted her egg in a flowerpot on my terrace. If she had built a nest I would have seen the twigs, swept them away, and forced her to establish her nursery on someone else’s property. But having discovered the readymade home of the flowerpot I was about to plant, she deposited her egg right in the center of it. And there it lay, in breath catching symmetry, its white surface translucent in sunlight, the offending pigeon nowhere in sight.

Oh. I would have to get rid of it. My upstairs neighbor, whose terrace also overlooks the garden, has begged me to not let pigeons breed in the area. These are homing pigeons, she pointed out quite reasonably, which means they never leave home, once they’re born they’re ours forever; and even if they go wandering they zone back as if on an elastic cord.

I studied the egg trying to warm up to doing it in. After all, I rationalized, lots of disasters can befall an egg: a patrolling cat, a vigorous gust; there is no guarantee any particular egg will hatch a chick. How simple to pick it up between finger and thumb, drop it in the trash, and head out to a movie to erase the image. Could I be part of nature’s dark side?...

With the help of the legendary Brazilian guitarist/composer Toninho Horta, the pair will embark on their first ArtistShare fan-funded project taking the fans on a journey of the exploration of the influence of Brazilian music in American Jazz.

CHRIS BARRON TAKES FANS ON A CREATIVE JOURNEY

CHRIS BARRON AND ARTISTSHARE FOR SONGWRITERS JOIN FORCES

Spin Doctors front man, and author to some of the biggest radio hits of the 1990’s, Chris Barron has launched a new participatory online project for his fans. Through this project, powered by ArtistShare for Songwriters, fans will receive access to Barron’s creative process as he writes a song. At the end of the process, fans will also receive a collectible, limited edition, enhanced CD of the final product. “I look forward to sharing the process of writing a song with my fans. That process will include taking fans from the very beginnings of the idea for a song, all the way through to the song being written. This should be a really cool and exciting journey,” commented Barron.

Writing a Bolero with Leonardo Granados, Edward Simon & Paquito d'Rivera

Writing a Bolero is like cooking a five-course fine dining meal. ArtistShare artist Leonardo Granados recently shared with fans his recipe for creating a Bolero. The primary ingredients needed are no secret--they are emotions, and more specifically, Granados’ emotions. Whether it is love, pain, or envy, each emotion is rooted in the specific experiences that Granados has had throughout his life.

It takes more than a voice to write an amazing Bolero. Boleros require great musicians to come together and share their experiences. And on Granados' first ArtistShare fan-funded project, "The Bolero Project," there is an all-star line-up of musicians, including Edward Simon, Paquito D’Rivera, Marco Granados, Ali Bello, Andy Gonzalez and Brenda Feliciano.

Egberto Gismonti To Record With Yeahwon Shin

This just in… Egberto Gismonti is confirmed to be recording a track with Yeahwon Shin on her current ArtistShare fan-funded project. Yeahwon and Egberto first performed together at the Incheon Jazz Festival in Seoul. Egberto had the following to say about that performance,

“It was a beautiful experience where friendship and music were very much present! I enjoyed very much what we did and I hope we can repeat and record that experience.”

Best of 2009

With 2009 winding to an end, ArtistShare artists and their fans are receiving an outpouring of year-end accolades. Making it on over 30 “Best of” lists, and counting, ArtistShare artists are honored by the appreciation. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the support and dedication of the fans who contributed to the creation of these albums.

Some of this year’s favorites include Jim Hall & Bill Frisell’s “Hemispheres,” Chris Potter Underground’s “Ultrahang,” Edmar Castaneda’s “Entre Cuerdas,” Jon Gordon’s “Evolution,” Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra’s “Sky Blue,” and this year’s Grammy nominees Geoffrey Keezer’s “Aurea,” Gerald Clayton’s “Two-Shade,” and The Clayton Brothers’ “Brother to Brother.” These fan-funded projects appeared on all sorts of “Best of” lists from the L.A. Times to the Jazz Times to NPR’s “A Blog Supreme."

When Grammy nominations were announced at the beginning of December, it was a bit of a surprise to see certain fan-funded projects missing from the ballots. However, despite it all, this recent outflow of support, from critics and fans alike, for ArtistShare fan-funded projects is an absolute achievement for each one of these projects.

Another humbling accolade came on behalf of Gene Seymour and Fred Kaplan. Both men listed Maria Schneider’s fan-funded project “Sky Blue” as one of the best jazz albums of the decade. You cannot help but smile when you hear something like that.

Grammy Nominated Album "Brother to Brother"

It would be quite an understatement to say that the Clayton family is musically-inclined. This year, three Claytons—John, Jeff and Gerald—received Grammy nominations. Brothers John and Jeff Clayton were nominated for "Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group" for their record "Brother to Brother."

Brother to Brother is a compilation of music inspired by songs composed by and/or performed by some of the many brother groups in jazz. John Clayton had the following to say about the record, "The album, to me, really represents more than anything family—it is basically family recognizing family. My brother and I were both influenced by some amazing family groups in jazz and we have finally had the chance to make that something that was in focus. The work that went into it was collective—we would bring our pieces to the band to rehearse, but then we knew the band members would breath their own soul into it. It made for a fun and rewarding experience to watch the evolution and growth of every song we did." Meanwhile, Jeff Clayton said, "I think this album deserves a volume 2 and a volume 3—there are so many brother themes that we would be honored to cover and they deserve illumination."

When the brothers were asked how they felt about their recent Grammy nomination both responded that they were honored and grateful. John also said, "It is at its core the industry people honoring their own... for that I always feel honored when I am nominated."

Also nominated this year is John's son Gerald Clayton. Gerald received a nomination for "Best Improvised Jazz Solo" for his solo on the track "All of You" from the "Two-Shade" recording. John, as a proud parent and fellow musician, remarked "When he was making the record I was in the studio and I heard all the magic—someone from NARAS heard and recognized the magic that was going on."

If father-son John and Gerald Clayton both receive Grammys in their respective categories it will be one for the record books. The only other time this has ever happened was during the 40th Annual Grammy Awards in 1998 when Bob Dylan and his son Jakob Dylan walked away with awards in Best Album and Best Rock Vocalist, Male (respectively).

Geoffrey Keezer Nominated for a Grammy

Geoffrey Keezer may have just received his first Grammy nomination (Best Latin Jazz Album for his record Áurea), but he is by no means a newbie to the music scene. Since the tender age of 18, when Keezer began playing with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, he has made a name for himself in the jazz world.

When asked to comment on his record Áurea and its recent Grammy nomination, Keezer had the following to say, "It's my first [Grammy nomination], and it's one of the best records I've made. One of the really nice things is we had enough time to do it. I made a record of music exactly the way I wanted to. And the results are clear-- you get quality and effort that is recognized by a Grammy nomination."

Keezer's album Áurea is inspired by Afro-Peruvian music, a genre that is characterized by intense rhythms and beats. It was those rhythms and beats that Keezer latched onto for inspiration when creating Áurea. When discovering this genre of music, Keezer was strongly influenced by the culture of South America. For this reason, 10% of album sales are being donated to help impoverished families in South America, with livestock donations via Heifer International.

Featured on Áurea is Peruvian percussionist Hugo Alcazar, Nigerian bassist Essiet Okon Essiet and American percussionist Jon Wilkan, saxophonists Steve Wilson and Ron Blake, guitarists Mike Moreno and Peter Sprague, bass clarinet player Phil O'Connor, acoustic bassist Susan Wulff, and Argentinean Singer Sophia Rei Koutsovitis.

John and his brother Jeff (The Clayton Brothers) are nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group for their album "Brother to Brother." This project is inspired on the series of concerts 'Dani Gurgel and the New Composers' and will feature many young and talented Brazilian composers and musicians, singing and playing along with me.

By participating on this project, you will have an inside view to producing this album, since the selection of the songs to the cover art. We will be sharing every aspect of what we do, and put it all on video, audio, photos and a journal, all in English and Portuguese. And, as soon as you enter the project, you'll already be able to download the 2007 album 'Dani Gurgel'.
Besides all album offers, you may purchase the 2009 Live 'Bootleg' Participant, and get virtual access to all our 2009 gigs (exclusive videos and photos of concerts and rehearsals, interviews with the musicians and audience, three full concerts on mp3, a tour journal...).

This project's name, Agora, means Now. But, right below that first meaning, there's Ágora, a place in Athens, where citizens would gather to make art and democracy. That's what we intend to do: gather people, as much as we can, to make an album that we all believe in.

My last album's name, 'Nosso', means 'Ours'. That's the feeling we want to expand on this one, that's not only about the composers and musicians involved, but it's about the fans too: we want you to feel you're part of this project, by participating, asking questions, leaving comments, watching and downloading all content on your offer, and funding it.

This is not my album, it's ours, and we're doing it together from scratch.
